Robot microphone stand

I know there's been a couple of threads on this subject before but i'm actually trying to build one of these sucka's at present. It's for a college project but if it works it's something i might try to put into production in the future.

Basically it's quite self descriptive, it's a microphone stand that can be positioned from the control room. I'm also trying to design this so it will be as low cost as possible.

My question is how to control the robot? There's a couple of different methods that could be used to have wireless control but none that really fits well to an application like this (low cost, low data, medium to high range, daw compatible).

What im thinking of doing is controlling the robot over another mic cable carrying DTMF tones (telephone dial tones). I think this is the most simple approach and would allow easy interfacing with a DAW. Anybody got any thoughts on the subject, would you be happy to use a product like this controlled by mic cable from an audio out in your studio?

standard issue model car/plane rf and power packs or DMX-512 devices?
rechargeable batteries in the base and an x-box remote? have fun!

This is great to hear about you working on this!
I always thought it would be great to have that! No big movement needed if i was a customer, place the mic like you always do, finetune from the CR.
But why DAW control? Saves you a controll unit, but i can´t imagine it being very handy.
I want a joystick. Or two of them.
And i want an integrated camera looking over the mike.
Midi control is something that comes to mind.

midi control would work but im not sure every studio has midi cabling from control room to live room. Also midi is limited distance wise. I like the idea of line level control because i think every engineer is going to be able to transfer that signal so it opens up potential for live work, location recording etc.

The reason im having it controlled from DAW is to keep costs down and to allow easy automation if required. It's a pity there isn't a wireless standard yet for this type of control.

A camera would be cool but i don't know how necessary it would be. Im gonna try to get the simplest version working first. (fingers crossed!)

So would you guys be happy if you bought a product like this that was controlled via mic cable. Or is everything expected to be wireless now?

You are right about midi.
the camera was a joke... but it would be fun!
I am glad nowadays if stuff is not wireless.
If it´s controlled via mic cable i would want to be sure that it can be run along other mic signal in a multicore without interfering.
Still, personally i see no need for automation and if it was daw controlled i would propably get a faderbox for it. Makes you listen better if you can sit by the micpre, adjusting gain and have the remote to the robot stand next to you.
But this is also a matter of taste.

MIDI and RS-232 signals can be carried via 1 pair shielded cable.

Best,

By example.

You can use a cheap Behringer BCR/BCF 2000 like a joystick thru midi to control motors with an arduino.

this concept would be cool and as intuitive as you get. one in the CR, one in the tracking room.

And, if you worry about distance, RS-422 at a low speed will work at over 1000ft. This too, is compatable with STP cable.

Well, this topic is reappearing in two different threads....and I dunno which one to make postings in....although my observations are related to robotics for television cameras.
