Rode k2 DIY electronics mod?

Hey fellas,

Ok, i have a rode K2, it has a NOS mullard tube in it. Same complaint as always, a little gritty on the top. I am interested to know if anyone knows of a DIY electronics upgrade for the mic and power supply? I have searched the net high and low, including slutz, and all that comes up is the tube thing. There is one guy who does an electronics mod, his name is John Bonnell, he has great reviews, if i come up empty on the diy thing, I will use him on the K2 for sure. I've been getting into doing mods myself lately, it's a great way to get a lot of bang for your $. I am not great at understanding electronics design, but i'm real good with an iron, and following directions and doing swap component upgrades.

any direction would be appreciated

thanx

Tony,

I've lived with a couple of K2s and did a lot of tube swapping, which is the simplest mod for big results. Mullards can be a little grainy with that mic. I bet you'll find a NOS Siemens, Amperex, or Telefunken to suit your taste better.

Look for an RCA labeled E188cc or 6922 with gold pins made in Germany. It will be a Siemens and it will be very open on the top end with a greatly extended bass. It won't have the muddy low end of the Mullard and will have tighter bass response.

I chatted with David Royer about K2 mods. The problem with modding a K2 is that by the time you replace the capsule and other important parts you might as well buy a new mic.

Hope that helps.

Dan
