Does anyone have experience working on Ampex machines? I have lots of questions

I am restoring a 1957 Ampex a122 1/4" machine. It needs serious work and I could use some advice. The first question I have is about some of the screws. There is brown paint/adhesive painted over some of the nuts on the fan motor. I want to take the motor out because it needs to be opened up and cleaned. I can't get the screws out because of this brown stuff. Does anyone know what it is or what chemical will dissolve it? More questions and photos later...

Your best bet is to join the Ampex Mailing List (via Recordist Group).

I can't help you myself since I don't work the domestic machines.

I've tinkered with the Ampex 600 series; not familiar with the 122. But I'd assume you're finding a general contact cement that's solidified over the years. You might try a few drops of acetone or isopropyl alcohol to soften it, or you might find that you can simply peel it free with your thumb nail or a semi-dull straight edge screwdriver. Then again, have you tried to break the screws free nonetheless? You shouldn't damage anything using conventional tools/methods. That stuff's nothing more than primative 'loctite'. Now, the rubber bushings that the motor rests on?? They're probably toast

I will try acetone if I can't break the stuff mechanically. The rubber bushings are actually in perfect shape. I'd rather not have acetone drip all over them. I just tested all the tubes in a TV-7 and they are all still good. It has some nice tubes too.
