MADI system clock setup

Ok, I've been reading through a lot of threads here, and the SSL & RME sites, and am finding it difficult to determine how to establish clock for my setup.

Here's my setup:

- Soundcraft Vi6 console output'ing MADI optical
- Vi6 is clocked externally to Aardsync Master clock
- Vi6 MADI optical output converted to MADI coax (SSL MADI opti-coax converter)
- MADI coax to edit suite 3 floors down
- converted back to MADI optical into DAW through MADI xtreme 128 (card currently clocked to MADI A card)
- output from MADI B to SSL Alphalink
- 24 ch Analog output (db25 to TRS) to console for monitoring
- 8 ch ADAT output to ADA 8000, converting to analog for additional 8 ch analog

Here's my question: how do I establish rock-solid clock for this entire setup? There is a definite improvement to the AD/DA of the vi6 clocking from the aardsync, and I want that improvement to carry right through.

Currently, I'm getting audio down from the main console into the DAW, and out into my monitoring console. However, it's exhibiting all the typical word clock clicks, indicating improper sync.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated!

Do you mean that the first MADI connector on the Xtreme 128 is *receiving* clock from the MADI signal from the Soundcraft mixer?

If you're not doing this and are, in fact, generating a clock with the 'MADI A' on the Xtreme, you'll get clicks, at least.

Two things to try:

Keep your current connections and make sure that everything in the chain is set to be a MADI slave, except the Soundcraft, which should be (is already?) set to follow the Aardsync.

Alternatively, try sending the wordclock outputs from the Aardsync down to all of the other digital devices, i.e. the MADI Xtreme's wordclock input; the Alphalink, etc. and make sure they're all set to slave to wordclock.

That's all I can think of without more details of your setup.

Thanks for your reply. I'll check it out tomorrow when I get back in, to see the available clocking options.

Hi, Graemme

Sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. I've been in touch with Jim @ SSL, as well as the local SSL guys here in Toronto, and they've been really helpful with information on our setup.

Tomorrow is the big day to see if everything works as intended. Aardsync feeding front house with word clock... AES down to the edit suite, into an Aardvark word clock sync distro, and word clock to the MADI Xtreme card, Alphalink, and ADA 8000.

Fingers are crossed!

Works like a charm! Master sync clock @ front house, aes to edit suite, word clock distro to alpha link, MADI xtreme card, and behringer D/A box.

It's a bit finicky with the startup chain. What I found that works best is master clock on before everything else, distro, interface / ADA, then computer.

Thanks for all the help!
