Hardware license

I has this thought a while ago, however I don't think I'd be able to produce and sell gear anytime soon so here's an idea for ess's and g's:

What if a crafted or manufactured piece of hardware came with a simple 512 or gb flash drive with the company's logo on it, which would be cited as the license for the device. The dongle would have to be connected during work with DAW's. However, in purely analog use, the company could not guarantee the functioning of the gear e

Jest a thought

To what purpose? What are you protecting, from whom? I sorta 'get it' with software, because software can be infinitely copied and distributed. But if you're making hammers, they cannot be copied for free... anyone trying to copy your hammer needs a foundry, and a sales force, and distribution.... and if you have a patent on your product, you should be covered. If what you've designed is not patentable, what are you trying to protect? Something you don't have the right to protect?
