Low freq noise - Tape machines

Hey there,

So my Revox A77 (XLR ins and outs) is starting to get a little noise over the years and has become unusable for critical work.. I want to change that.

problem #1

I get these occasional pops up to -50dB (every ca 20 sec irregularly). They occur in both channels and are between 20-300 HZ

problem #2

When reusing tape i get a bit of muffled (lf) bleed at around -70db from the last recording.

Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks

Joel

Has the unit been recapped?
Has the headstack been relapped?
Has it been properly demagged and aligned?
Biased properly?
Erase current adjusted for maximum erasure?

Best,
Tom

sounds like a cap discharging.

Get a bulk tape eraser. The big platter kind, not the one that looks like a Chinese iron.
