Jet City JCA22H Tubes

Hey all,
Just bought a Jet City JCA22H amp head and am loving it. But as with all tube amps, it always seems a little bit better when you upgrade the tubes. Has anybody tried any with this particular head? I was going to buy the EH golds but before I do I'd like some opinions if there are any.

Thanks!

Great amp, loving mine too! I have played with quite a few different tubes on it, and settled on JJ EL84's for the power section, it really tightened up the lows and low mids, added nice body. The stock chinese tubes are actually great if you love scooped mids and high gain, they seem to be naturally scooped and super high output. I did not like JJ 12ax7's in the pre's, more muddy, less definition, too dark and lower gain. Tung-Sol 12ax7's have amazing body in the mids, very clear and defined and similar output to the chinese, but you do SLIGHTLY lose some of the massive breakup the chinese have. If you like metal, keep the chinese, if you enjoy mids, try tungsol.

I did try a 12at7 in the first channel to try to get it more clean, works great in other amps but didnt notices a significant difference that I liked in the JCA22h, instead I just keep the pre-gain at like 1ish, and turn the power up to 6ish on that channel for clean cleans.

Haven't tried EH tubes in it.

Hope that helps some!

Thanks man!
I do love the way it sounds as it... what an amp for that price eh?
I have a tendency to rock out a bit so Hi-gain is important. I might just try the EHs withe gold pins since I can get them at my local GC. I can return them if I don't like em.

Well, I've been playing my Jet City for a while now. Every hum-bucking guitar I use though it sound muddy to me while rhythm chunking. I have not changed the original tubes yet. Do you guys think swapping them out would help with the right tubes?

This is an old post but a buddy and I were recently working on tweaking the sound and came across the same issue when trying to get a nice chug without the mud, seems the OD bleeds a bit but the best results came from replacing v1 with something with lower gain like a 12at7 and the rest with JJ 12ax7s which reduced the mud. The headroom seemed a lot more enjoyable to the ear and sat in the mix much better but your results may vary.. Based on some other threads I took the advice to re-bias which made a huge overall change for the better. Hope that helps.

Yeah still I haven't tried many tubes yet. A buddy gave me an old Sovtek 5751 I put in V1. Still, I wasn't satisfied. I ended up experimenting with some pedals and I found a tone I can deal with. A Barber Electronics Direct Drive with the volume all the way up and the gain all the way down. It completely cleared up the muddiness. It does get rid of some low end but I'm OK with it.
