power supply replacement

I have a gate that needs to have its power transformer replaced.
I have searched out a probable replacement, but i fear it may be a little underpowered. The problem is that it needs a low profile design to fit into the 1U case.

I am wondering if there are any opinions regarding the possibility of building an external power supply for this unit. I am thinking of getting a tranny that supplies enough volts and amps and housing it in an external case, and then running the +/- DC voltages to the unit, where the regulators are located.

would this cause problems? or would it be better to build a PSU with the tranny and all the other components (diodes, regulator ICs, capacitors) in an external box?

What is the make/model of the gate? I just replaced the power transformer in a Drawmer DL-441 comp the other day and it was around $30-$40 bucks. Unless it's for something that's discontinued, it may be easier and cheaper to just get a replacement from the manufacturer.
If you are in Canada, I can probably help with that.
Best,
Ike

hey Ike! nice holiday?
i dont think the company is still around, its a US Audio (valley people) Gatex.
it has +/- regulators that are rated at 1A. I found a transformer from hammond that SHOULD fit into the current pin holes on the board right now, but i only gives around 650mA when using center tape (+/- 17v).

That should work fine. I can't imagine that unit draws anything close to 1 amp...that's just the maximum that the regulators are rated for.
Best,
Ike

Thanks Ike, i will order the hammond when i get a chance and see if it improves things. The old tranny is hot and vibrates, and the unit is a little noisy, so I suspect this will bring great improvement to the power quality and (at least) the mechanical noise factor.
