Any info about this one? Found nothing on the internet. Class A or AB? Similar to 3116?

Thanks.

That number belongs to modules used in a range of consoles called PSM's (portable sub mixer) produced in the early 1970's. Not many were made and most differed from one another. I think that there were about 20 different variants.

Early ones used 238 boards which were the predecessor to the 338 but mounted on edge.

The power boost function on the 338 was used on these as they used a 238/338 to drive the pan pot and bus switches. There's no channel output and with the 238/338 sweating it's b*lls off driving the current load they shouldn't have anything else of significant loading added to its burden.

They had better facilities than the 3116.

One model had a staggeringly expensive gain switch that rotated three times with 3 leds above it adding 24dB's (or thereabouts) to each rotation.

All class A.

Hi

To be honest... it was around 1972/73, they didn't make many, those they did were different from the one before, etc., so I can barely remember.

In concept they were along the lines of the 34128 suitcase module idea where the channel module included the mic pre, the Eq, and the pan control and aux send pot(s). In the case of the PSM the fader was external to the module in the normal fader position.

I have a picture of a really simple PSM on my site that you can see here...

This one you can kind of figure out the channel if you assume the gain control is at the top and the pan pot and aux send pot are at the bottom.

There were several different types of channel module, all the impossible to remember 1D005 kind of deal. and I can't recall specifics.

They were nice little consoles though, much smaller than others produced by Neve around that time (eg BCM10)

I've just spoted one (module), racked, with fader (not original) and psu. Price is not too high so it looks interesting. On the other hand, it seems there is just 1 (input) transformer... does this module make sense outside of the PSM mixer?

I'm adding some pictures I found on the internet, just to make this thread more visual . The model with 3 leds is labeled 1D001, strange concept...

Hi

It's virtually impossible to get hold of the Smiths rear mating connector unless someone has a dusty one in the bottom of their junk box.

You would have to solder directly to the PCB tracks.

They aren't bad modules but there's no direct output and replacement parts are bordering impossible to obtain.

Not my top choice of module to rack...

Hi

You are very welcome, the 1D001 was really a work of art.

It had two sections of PCB mounted Elma 08 switches one behind the other for the input gain switch. The front switch could virtually fully rotate but between the switch banks was a clock like escapement of gearing that advanced the second switch bank 30 degrees after each rotation of the front switch.

The LEDs gave indication on how many times the switch knob was rotated and how much gain was involved.

I can't recall, after 40 years, whether this switch was ever used on another console but I have a feint recollection it was also used on the custom, portable, RCA Ballantine console that went, I believe, to Cedar Creek studios and I have a small photo of it on my site.

I'm not sure where that console is now...

Memories....
