| Gear nut | Sound Skulptor 1073 clone complete
Hi all, I've just completed my first Sound Skulptor MP73. Bar a couple of minor hiccups and a faulty transistor, it all went very well and it sounds amazing. Just thought I'd post a few snaps of the build:

Yep, next three will be happening soon, then a rack of 512's. It sounds fantastic as expected. Compared to my Mackie Onyx pre's it does stand tall but I have to say, the onyx pre's are no slouch. I haven't stacked up a whole mix with the skulptor pre's yet which is where I expect to hear the real benefits. It has a wonderful saturation when driven that never gets grainy. It just sound big and seems to compliment whatever is put into it. Smiley face |

I'd quite like to do a Sound Skulptor rack, the pres get a lot of good reviews but I'm also interested in the DI. Does anyone know how it compares to the Radial J48?

I have a J48 as luck would have it and it's a really good box. Really full round signal from it and it captures the WHOLE bass. It has a Jensen tranny . The Skulptor DI is also pretty hot cuz you run switch the di signal to run through any pre in the rack so if you had 2 512's and 2 1073's, you could choose which output stage was more appropriate for the situation and, of course you have the flexibility in tone to drive that instrument as much or as little as you like using the gain/pad. It also has 2 inputs per rack. |

Thanks for the info, if you didn't already have the radial would you feel you're missing out?

Are you planning on housing more cards in that rack? What was the cost of the build in the end? |

If I already owned 2 skulptor racks I probably wouldn't buy a J48, however, as I have it, I certainly wouldn't sell it because it's a box that can follow the bassist & his amp, stage, studio, any application. The Skulptor racks tend to remain in the control room. The build cost about £650 including pre, chassis & PSU, however, now I have PSU & chassis, the additional pre's are only £260. The PSU will power 8 so the expensive bit is done. If you buy 4 pre's, a chassis (which comes with DI) & a PSU I believe it's 1400 euros. Pretty good for what you get. |

Thats great value - provided it sounds good; The build certainly looks great. You had a chance to play with it much?

Not as much as I'd like. I've got a harsh deadline to meet with an album at the moment so time is tight.
