1176. What's a good broadcast substitute?

There is a radio transmission station using an old 1176 for it's limiter.

They will let me have it - if I get a suitable replacement for them.

What would be a suitable substitute for this, a comp/limiter to be used for broadcast application?

I have heard of people using a TC ELECTRONICS finalizer. Now, eh, would you send me that 1176 that you are no longer using?

Guess they want to get rid of this awful unit "coloring" the sound. ;)

Why not an un-colored sounding unit. Guess I would like that myself for broadcasting. The tracks are already mastered.

Judging by the mono limiter in the signal chain, I'd guess it's an AM station?

The Aphex Dominator was (maybe still is) an industry standard for many years. An Aphex Compellor is another option.

Here's a few links to some interesting looking products for this purpose....

The Behringer Composer unit may be cost effective solution too !!

Cheers
Tim.

If they're dumb enough to consider it, buy 'em a brand-spankin' Berringer and a six pack of beer ;)

If you want to be nice, a Dominator or Compellor. You might be able to get away with a Behringer Composer or a new dbx 160A. Maybe a Symetrix 501? Those are actually useful compressors and aren't too expensive used. Symetrix is pretty well known in the broadcast world, could be the best option.

Uhhh.. Orban Optimod? I think that's pretty industry standard. They are old, analog ones that wouldn't be too expensive. The new digital ones do all the ridiculous multiband limiting, enhancing and cost alot and squeeze all life out of the signal.

Side note, Optimods can sound pretty cool. There's an old analog one that I've heard that kicks ass. Pretty damned transparent and very fat sounding.
