Question Hi or Low impedance on this mic...

I scored a classic Shure Brothers 560 dynamic lavalier microphone.
It came with a 1/4" T/S connector.
I want to change this to an XLR cable (balanced).
How would you wire THIS mircophone for your standard PreAmp XLR connector.

Use a line-matching transformer for true balanced.

Otherwise, to remain unbalanced, remove whatever connector is currently on it, and simply replace with an XLR: the tip wire of the (1/4") goes to pin 2(XLR) , and the shield to pin 1. Aren't lavs usually used with a transmitter? Why do you want to change it? Just curious.

If the cable has two wires plus shield at the connector, just replace the TS with an XLR, shield to pin one, the black wire to pin two and the white to pin three, then follow the datasheet instructions to set the mic up for low-z

If the cable only has one wire and the shield you'll need to replace the cable first, but it was shipped from Shure with a two conductor cable.

I'm glad you asked this question. I plugged the mic into the MBox with the T/S 1/4" that came with it and used the instrument source, set the gain to about 80% and it worked like a charm. Very good noise floor in a room with all the normal household stuff going (fridge, puter, heaters, etc) and registered about -90db in the low end. The overall response is not that great as you can see in the literature but works very well for some intruments. The low self-noise amazed me

BTW, yes, it is a shielded wire pair terminated at the connector so changing it to a balanced connector would be simple. I'm not sure if it is set to hi or low Z but as you asked, why mess with it

Sounds like you found a winner. As Dan mentioned, it's easily converted to balanced, but that requires some disassembly. Don't know if you're aware, but the data sheet is available and gives good instruction on changing over.

Hey, if it works OK now... tutt
