Another stupid idea from a guy who doesn't know any better.

Would it be possible to use something like this or this to make a quick and dirty 'effects limiter' along the lines of a Level-Loc type thing.

I know it would be a one trick pony, but do you think it would make a... uh.... good pony?

Looks like a pure brick wall if it's to protect a transmitter, but if you want cheap facist limiting you could give it a try...

Yes a telephony and ss stereo transmission sort of thing.

One trick pony - yes.
Sound any good - difficult to tell.

If you have the time and need a special then it could be worth an experiment.

I know one fellow that does film specials and likes to make simple audio effect units that almost resemble stomp boxes.
Yes he could use plugs these days for many of the sounds BUT still preffers to use his toys. Telephone sound and two way radio speach .. clock radio .. they are all just a little different and he has a unit for each. AND many more different sound for the various projects he has worked on. Mostly one trick pony stuff BUT they are his sounds and no-one else has them.

A stereo smash drum sub group comp mixed back in with the main drum could turn out to be your signature sound. Stranger things have happened.

Hi

When I was Special Orders Manager at Neve I was asked by Central TV to design a tele-distort effects unit that sounded like a telephone... the Neve tele-distort unit was just a high pass/low pass filter and didn't really sound like a phone conversation.

The circuit I cam up with was a HP/LP filter with a very steep high pass and fairly steep low pass filter, but more importantly, it had a distortion knob that introduced between 0 and around 70% distortion. There were several filter options and with just a dab of the distortion (say around 10%) you could get a very effectve telephone sound.

Later, London Weekend TV asked for a similar beast but with 99% distortion. I said "Excuse me, but what on earth are you going to use 99% distortion with?"

They replied that it would be used at low volume for crowd noise.. the indistinct "rhubarb, rhubarb" chatter that you get in the background of a bar or busy store. Anyway, that took a bit of head scratching but I came up with a circuit that produced 99% distortion which basically means that a waveform is so utterly stuffed that it bears no relation to what went into the unit!

After I left Neve I made a bunch of them for BBC TV centre that included camera switching so that the effect switched on and off depending on which camera and subject were being viewed.

I've often wondered about re-introducing the beast... that was around 12 years ago that I made the last one. There aren't many effects around that deliberately wreck a sound as much as that puppy!
