Painton fader pin-out info - would be appreciated!

I have been unable to dig up any pin info at all on Painton faders. Perhaps my Google-Fu powers are entirely insuffient, or there aren't many using these that don't already know them like the back of their hand.

The model I have is marked G.S 11-02-0074-01 and the have the typical swivel arm, with a 0 - 30 scale.

I am installing them in a mastering console and would be very thankful for tips on correct connections.

Thanks!

Hi
Opening it up should reveal most of what you need to know.
The last time I looked at one of these was around 25 years ago and my memory is not quite that detailed.
It will be difficult to 'measure' as it is not like a conventional 'pot' but a stepped constant impedance attenuator.
Perhaps a decent photo of it's 'guts'? IIRC it has a quater turn fastener or two to hold the side plate on.

Thanks for your reply, Matt.

I have done some continuity testing on the different parts of the board and found some parts that correspond to pins 1, 2 & 3...and case is connected way over on pin no. 12, and there are 2 sets of switches + lights to make the thing a little more packed.

My question then is: What to connect where on the 3 (or is that 4) pins that are significant to the fading part of the constant impedance circuit?

I'm not yet fluent in T-pad, H-pad etc. designs & am wondering which type this is and how it is meant to be connected. I'm guessing it is unbalanced, for starters...

Hi
I am guessing but I think the 'output' will be the wiper arms that go to the continuous arc of track.
Not quite enough light to see what all the connections are, although nicely focussed (unlike many of my pics!).
You can discount the microswitches of course.
I would expect it to be balanced I think although if you have 4 'ends' and 2 wipers that are not linked it may be 'stereo unbalanced' but I would doubt that although could be ised in this way if you wished.

I found a picture of a carbon track version with a + marking on two of the board, telling me it is unbalanced & meant to be connected serially. Am I right in thinking this?

I also disassembled one of my faders to get a better look at the back of the board, where the wires were attached, and it looks very similarly laid out, if a lot more component-packed.

One thing I notice is that there are several wires connected on the outside at pin 2 (white lead) as if it used to be joined to a summing rail. That could be the output then. Thing is, connected like that, there is a 28 dB insertion drop with the fader at max, so that doesn't check out.

I hope I can make sense of this. If you are able to speed up the process, I'd like that

OK, it looks like I have found a way that works as expected, by experimentation. Now I just have to understand why it works
