Totally stupid wiring question - help!

OK, so I've got an Orban EQ here w/ barrier strip connectors on the back. I want to attach it to my TRS patchbay.

SO, I have a few Hosa TRS cables here. I figure I'll just hack the ends off on one side to attach to the EQ and just plug the phono plug ends into my patchbay.

CUTTING the phono plugs off on one side reveals a ground wire, a red wire, and a white wire. Now I don't know which wire is + and which is -, the white or the red?

BUT, it occurs to me, does it even matter? As long as I wire up the inputs and outputs the same way, even if they're backwards (+ where - should be and vice versa,) won't it still work? If say I wire them backwards, won't it be flipping the phase 180 degrees on the way in and flipping it back 180 degrees on the way out? Won't it?

Anyone?

Yeah, in a balanced situation the net result will be in phase. But, a volt/ohm meter is a pretty cheap tool that has a lot of uses including telling you which wire goes to tip/ring. Well worth having one around.

Open the other end of the TRS plug and see which color wire goes to "ring". This one will be your "+" the tip will be "-" and the sleeve will be "ground".

ERic

(most likely the red will be "+"..)

A couple of things ...
Hosa is usually a molded plug and not openable.
And, more importantly, around here the tip is + (positive) not - (negative).

Orban gear was known for being rather fussy about wiring and grounding. Try the above ideas but if you have troubles, post the model number and maybe I can give more specific advice.

Yeah, these Hosa plugs are molded. Tried doing some brutal surgery on one to figure out what went where but that just left me with lots of mutilated little plastic bits and thousands of unanswered questions. OK, maybe not thousands.

Any particular volt-o-meters to recommend, Rick?

David, this is a 674A.

Honestly I don't. For simple continuity tests I still use a cheapy (approx. $20) analog meter that I've had for 30 years. For voltage measurements I use a Fluke digital meter that I got at Fry's for about a $100. I find the cheap meter with needle indicator easier for continuity checking than a digital type of meter. I make lots of custom wiring harnesses and still use the little needle meter to "ring out" every contact on every project. A little cheapy will serve you well in all your cable adventures.
