Makeup gain for dbx 119

I have got my hands on an old dbx 119. It sounds really cool, but it has no makeup gain, so if the gainreduction is 10db, the signal loss is 10db....

So Im thinking about installing a gain stage pre the output..

Anybody with experience with this?

I had a few API 325 cards in a rack just for line amp use (which is what they were intended for). I would run all sorts of gear into it.
