Question OC44 modern germanium (or non-germanium) replacement?

I have a Rangemaster type guitar pedal circuit that uses the OC44 germanium transistor.

I don't know much about transistors though so I am just wondering if there is a modern production OC44-type transistor out there. Also, can I experiment with substituting any non-germanium (silicon?) PNP transistors just to see how they sound instead?

Not asking about NOS obviously.

Thanks.

Can I add that many bands sound better when they are 1Km away compared to 1 Metre! --Matt Syson
