| Pearlheiser P1DMD-421 I recently bought some old mics "as is", one of which was a Peal P1D (late 1940's) with a crystal capsule. As it turned out, the mic was totally dead, but the housing was so cool that I had to do something with it. Since I had an MD-421 capsule that I couldn't use (no center-post, three-pin plug) on my old-style MD-421 (with center-post), I thought I'd try a bit of fusion. I used an RJ14 socket & plug to make removal of the capsule simple so I wouldn't ever have to solder the old bakelite amphenol connectors again as they were pretty fragile. For the time being, I've bypassed & removed the old on-off leaf switch that was in the handle, but I might re-introduce it as a pad switch should the need arise. The capsule sits in the housing via a "pressure-fit" layer of pipe insulation which provides adequate mechanical isolation and makes it simple to adjust the capsules position inside the housing. I think the result looks & sounds great! See the attached pictures. -Frank |
