Thread Starter | Help me find this Neutrik XLR part
Originally posted this in the general forum, but got only silly answers. I am looking for a part that was used in many different Neutrik XLR connectors, its the plastic threaded bushing that grips the cable inside the connector. Picture A shows it in a NC3FRC model PIcture B shows one "in the wild" Apparantly, all the various models that used this part have now been discontinued. Chris at Redco was unable to help me. Does anyone know where I could get about 100 of these? I would even consider buying older, discarded neutrik connectors if this part could be salvaged. I have about 60 nice custom-built mic cables that use these and I don't want to have to redo all of them with new connectors. Some of them got abused by careless people...... Thanks for any help you can offer ! Last edited by TRJanuary; 10th March 2010 at 04:27 AM.. Reason: forgot pics |

You won't be able to buy that part from any distributor. If you contact Neutrik directly, they might get you that part, but I suspect that you will just have to buy a complete new connector.

Seems I recall seeing a Chinese Neutrik clone - dunno if the guts are similar...

Even if you can get the plastic part, you can't install it onto the connector without desoldering (or cutting) the cable. If you have to re-terminate the cable, it would be silly to reuse the same old connectors. First of all, the terminals are likely to be corroded and make poor contact. Secondly, these plastic bushings are going to break again. That's why Neutrik discontinued them.

Believe it or not, these were VERY expensive XLR connectors, and are as good as new, except for the bushing. These came out in the 80's or 90's, I think they were called neutrik "Black Maxx" or something like that. All black with gold contacts. But most of the parts are common to the traditional neutrik connectors. And they did not break from normal wear and tear, they broke because they were cinched down onto tiny 22AWG cables. Its not a problem to "re-terminate the cable", its my job, I'm a studio tech. Do people really throw away perfectly good XLR connectors just because they have to fix a cable? I need to get out of the studio more. And the bushings were only recently discontinued. |
