I need help with a Neve Vr60

hey guys,

my friend said i would find some help here:

Im going to be doing a session in amsterdam on thursday on a VR60 Desk and i dont have any experience with larger Neve desks.

I have worked with smaller analogue consoles and digital desks.

I would really appreciate some tips and tricks about the technical quirks and musical qualities of the desk - things too look out for etc.

thank you very much in advance

sid

Doesn't the studio have a well trained assistant that can directly help you with these questions, once you've sat down to start a mix? You need a patch monkey, with knowledge of this desk, studio and room, so you can effortlessly ease yourself, into your own comfort zone with how you like to do things.

just one day? too many tricks will get in the way unless you have the time.

one thing I would do is patch out of the master faders (pre control room pot) to your speakers because the monitoring system is way off. you'll need someway of attenutating the mix though.

Mix or tracking?

Use your assistant well. It will be fine.

Phantom power is on by pushing down the mic gain pot. Double check when patching in ribbon mics.
Filters are on by pulling them up. Noted by red LED.
I usually split the desk and use the right side small faders for sends to tape. Then use the left side of desk in mix mode.
It's not a too complicated desk really. See if you can download a manual somwhere. Have a look through, and any specific questions just ask here.

Hey there,

Further to MusicTech86's request i am an engineer moving with my producer to a permanant residency in a studio with a Neve VR60, learning from scratch, i saw there was a pdf manual published a while back on this forum but the link is down now. I have used Harrison, SSL, API, and MCI consoles before for tracking and mixing.

For someone who is about to work with this console for the forseable future any tips and tricks as well pitfalls to avoid would be great in any format you can provide, i am sure me and then desk will get on well enough soon.

PM your eMail address and I'll send you a copy of the operator's manual. The service manual(s) are huge, but really aren't needed just to get up to speed.

One thing to check on any V series Neve is to find out of the monitor system has been updated. If not, you may want to use a pair of channels for your monitor master, as there is a lot of weirdness with the monitor system ex factory.

Experienced with the VR60... not the legend BUT a couple small things on the VR60 that would probably apply...

Mostly what's been covered about the filters, phantom, and monitoring but also remember that you have to assign your Aux sends to the monitor path in record mode (by pressing the appropriate button next to the short-throw fader) that gets some people -- they don't default to the monitor path a-la SSL.

The metering for the compressor/gate is a little strange. A single, three-color LED next to the plasma meter will tell you what it's doing.

The Insert is activate by pressing the INS button in the EQ section but the EQ doesn't have to be active. And again, to assign dynamics, EQ or insert to the monitor path, press the button next to the short-throw.

Don't mean to throw a bunch of basic stuff at ya but it's stuff I'd want to know about if I were you!

The legend has improved switches, slightly different metering on the master section and an upgraded DC power distribution scheme. The manual I sent was for the legend (although the consoles are so similar it really doesn't matter).
