Mackie 1801 Subwoofer makes big banging loud noises occasionally.

If I leave my Mackie Sub on for a couple of hours it starts making horrible loud noises. It starts off sounding like someone knocking at the door. After a while it turns into a solid note. It's full volume regardless of the volume knob position and the "thermal" light comes on every times the noise happens.

Any clue what this could be?

What i'm hoping for you is that it's from a bad input connection, or problems with the gear feeding it.. You could wire up an xlr with pins 2 and 3 shorted and plug it in to see.

If it still happens the unit needs to go in for repair. That sounds likely since the volume knob has no effect.

hi
Unplug everything except the power cable and leave it on. If it makes the noise still then it is time to get it fixed. Terminating the input with a 'shorted' XLR should not be necessary to prove this much.
