Thread Starter | How do I Encode to Mid - Side? Hi there guys, Got an idea for a piece of hardware the other night while I was trying to get to sleep. Stayed up all night with stuff going around in my head so please help me get a good nights sleep! I know how to decode a M-S signal from say a mic. But just so I don't drive myself crazy and get some sleep tonight. Would you remind me of how to Encode a M-S signal from a L-R signal. From my nights insomnia I thought that S=L-R and M=L+R. I see how summing the channels will give the mid but that will still give me some side in the mid. The side seems quite obvious but the mid is confusing me. Probably because I've not hand any sleep. Anyway, if i encode mid side like this and then decode using the usual method will this give me exactly the same signal? Oooh, my brain hurts. Thanks for your help Robert ![]() |

| Hi You can already buy them! Side is L-R and if it is done with sufficient fidelity then it should all come out in the wash. Google 'M+S recording or whatever and some articles should pop up. Good luck Matt S |

| Copy the R, flip the phase on the copy and call it "-R". Sum L and R to make M. Sum L and "-R" to make S. And then, for $hits and giggles, you can reverse it by copying S and flipping the phase to get "-S" L is the sum of M and S R is the sum of M and "-S" This is easy in the box.... -tINY |
