The circuit in a 47 is not as simple as that in a C12, totally different tube and layout. Looks like this mic is more of a C12 type circuit, but would need the schematic to say for sure. Even if it's a little different the Apex 460 mod would be a bit easier to do than trying for a 47. You could get a capsule voiced similar to a 47, but that's where the similarities would end. My modded Apex 460 has more of a 67 tone to it, not near as bright as a C-12 or even a 47 (we tested it against an original 47 and I liked it better on some things due to the smother top end). Have a look at Prodigy Pro at the Apex 460 thread as I believe this mic or one made by the same company is mentioned, they're all pretty much the same Chinese knock-off. A Place to Start

I agree, this circuit is much closer to the C12. A couple of folks have gone for a more U47 type sound and liked what they heard. Links to the threads are below. This whole thread is interesting. The page I linked to has LTD2's extensive mod experiments. APEX 460 DIY Mod thread - Topic Powered by eve community Here's another good one: The "Spirit of 47" project - Home Recording The problem will be sourcing the rarer parts. Try Dale Ulan's M7 type capsule at Prodigy Pro. Many suitable transformer replacements are available, but those found at TAB/Funkenwerk would be pretty tough to beat. Some at Prodigy Pro hand wind their own clones from time to time and sell them there. And finally, there's the tube, which you WILL NOT find for a reasonable price. This is a reason you won't get super close to the U47 sound, just the same family of sounds. Craig |
