| It seems that Apple is in a deep identity crisis. Are they hardware manufacturer first, software second, vice versa or bit of both? The current IT market is very fast paced and highly specialized, so do it all philosophy from 80's, which made Apple, is not commercially viable in modern mass market. I think that Intel is not after niche market provided by Apple OS. It must be something much BIGGER at stake to risk open confrontation with mighty Microsoft! My guess is that they are after Apple's highly regarded expertise in turnkey computer system design. Intel is slowly loosing battle with AMD in the low-end, SOHO and game market. Mid to high end workstation/server market, traditionally Intel's playground, is now under heavy pressure from AMD's 64 bit Opterons and future Duals and Quads; they obviously need the edge – bullet proof system, which Apple certainly could provide. This, from Intel's viewpoint, would fit the bill nicely! We have to see if the new Apple platform will be open regarding OS choice. If Intel successfully negotiated this, Intel powered Apple could have big impact on major players in this market segment - IBM, HP, Sun, etc... . Why am I talking about Intel and not about Apple? I personally believe that this was an Intel led deal, and they've made an agreement that Apple should step forward with media statements to draw attention away from Intel’s real intentions. Cheers! |

| heres something else to think about from a strategy viewpoint. Lets look at IBM in all of this. IBM have a business history of being very clever in selecting markets. For example years ago UNIVAC and BURROUGHS did a nice business in mainframes.... but it was IBM who ended up the leader in mainframes. In summary IBM have a shrewd business history of letting others develope markets and then coming in aggressively. Also IBM's strength has always been its R and D capacity. IF IBM were not happy about about the intel/apple hookup....and also worried about AMD's growing inroads with semprons, 64's and dual opterons etc etc... they could decide to bring out a new hi performance processor we know nothing about .....put it in a cheap gaming console ....that oh by the way can act as a recording studio, surf the net etc. IBM is also plowing lots of investment into Linux. One thing to remember is i bet IBM never liked the fact MS became the dominant desktop OS possibly. In summary IBM could undercut everyone with a cheap powerfull Linux based box. After having let everyone else seed the market ....as in the past. In summary the game isnt over till the fat lady sings. I dont think IBM is going to slink off into the sunset.....just my personal view. |
