Otari MX-80 Error 73 Bad news? Help!!!

Please Help Im up the creek with a small paddle. Big probs with my MX-80 deck.

During seeion today (of course) after power outage of five or so seconds the MX80 took a nosedive. Symptoms are as follows:

Error 73 flahing on the deck but not the locator

Audio was passing in playback and it would record but it was acting real wierdlike the logic was trying real hard then gettin stupid an failing.

after 30 seconds of play or record the deck would break tension and stop.

some communication probs with the transport which would initially work then stop counting and reset from sel rep to individual as well as disarm all tracks even if the switch was armed.

luckily the transport worked enough to wind off the tape

I need to be back in operation by monday so if anyone could help please shed some light.

Thanks

William

Pretty hard to fix something like this without being on the spot, but, if you had some power supply fluctuation, then chances are the machine power supply may have been damaged. You could slide out the Master CPU board and see if you can see any burnt parts. Also the transport control board.

I don't have a MX80 service manual at my finger tips so can't help much beyond that. I think your best solution is to get a tech in ASAP!

Unhappy cant find error 73

I found a manual at this address

but I cant find error 73 anywhere. My only guess is that it is error 93 and being displayed wrong? Otherwise shame on otari for not listing all the errors in the manual.

Otherwise the site above has tons of pdf manuals.

That manual is not much help, the schematics are not included! First step however is to check the power supply voltages, but you probably will need the service schematics to do this.

Sorry I cannot help any more than this.

otari mx-80 error 90- 92

I have some similar problems with my Mx-80 and thought I would continue the post...

sometimes when i power up I get error 90(initial communication error) and the remote wont do much or nothing then after 15 minutes lights come on the remote and it's fine for a while and then sometimes the remote conks out again
sometimes when i power up I get error 92 (endefined error) but only for a moment and then all is ok.
the error 90 can be a real pain as the remote will work partially(transport functions work but record enable wont work and time display stays on whatever time it was on when the communication failed again)
dan Zellman did a bunch of work to correct this when it happened last year but it is back.
someone said it may be noise on the ac line causing the error and I did see a bulletin from otari about that but so hard to tell if that is the cause. I dont think it is.
anyone else have this problem?
all cables and connections are good
the power supply was rebuilt
it is the first year 1986 verison but software is the latest.
the intermittent problem is such a pain to track down
as soon as a tech shows up it works!!!

any insight or ideas about what to do would be great
thanks
