Any way to reduce noise on those Meek VC6?

Hello guys, I have a Joe Meek VC6 that I want to try to make it sound quieter... ´cause this thing IS noisy.
Any IC´s or anything that can be exchanged in order to make it sound better?

Is it just the mic pre that is noisy or the whole thing?

Pop the lid and see what opamps are in there, especially around mic preamp stage. The OP275 from Analog Devices is a safe replacement for any TL072's in the audio path, but might not work correctly in other situations like the compressor sidechain detection circuit.

Hope this is of some help
Tim.

Ok, here´s the thing:
The only chips I could identify inside the VC6 are those, 1 TL084CN on the pre amp and 3 LM324N on the compressor and the output (I´m guessing!!). Does this help?

Those are both pretty cheap op amps. Neither one is going to drive a balanced line.

I'm guessing that the LM324 gets used for filtering.

The TL084 is resonably quiet itself, but will only be good for about 60dB of gain. If you use all that gain, the S/N will be about 60-70dB.

What is the input impedance ot the unit?

Low noise quads are not common, at least those that will do audio well. The obsolite BB4134PA is a good choice if you can find one, otherwise an Aries adaptor with the surface mount OPA4134UA should work. Alternatively, a LT1359CN is very good. You will need to check that all feedback resistances above 2~3k ohms have a small ~22pf cap across the feedback resistor. Local .1 uf psu decoupling caps are also needed.
