| Gear maniac | DIY M/S box
Hello. I'm heading for some stuuf to make a changep in mastering stuff - talking about a good EQ, another compressor besides the Avalon 747, and I'm thinking to aply the M/S technique when mastering, so: Is there any schematics for doing the M/S thing properly - passive or active? |

I don't have the link handy, but the Jensen Transformer site has a library of schematics including a very straightforward M/S circuit that utilizes a pair of their transformers. Other than the transformers, the circuit is very basic, just a few resistors and the necessary connectors. One of the easiest pro audio DIY projects you will find. Its not super cheap, as the two transformers will set you back well over $100 (its been a few years, I don't remember the exact cost), but the only other costs are for a chassis/box to mount the circuit and a few bucks for some XLR connectors. Good luck.

Hmm, never heard of using transformers for M/S! I split the S channel to two inputs, flip phase on one, and you can control width by how loud the sides are compared to the centered M channel. So Simple! Did that for years for radio classsical broadcasts. Now I record a stereo track with M > L and S > R and use Waves S1. <L>

Lou, I think the original poster was asking the opposite -like it's done in mastering- making a M/S signal from a stereo L+R one Herwig |

When I'm fixing up live to 2 track mixes (in PT) I do that with Waves S1... do stuff to the mid or side and recombine it. Not quite mastering, but helps some things! <L> |
