How to test a mic capsule

How to do it? Can it be done with a volt/ohm meter? I have heard no, why not?

Any way other than connecting to an amp?

Wires coming from the mic, red = hot, black = nutral, exposed = ground?

Which pin (1,2,3)is which (American standard)?

If I were wiring an on off switch, would it matter which lead was used?

I kind of know the answers, but I am working on an important project and the little doubt monster is raising it's voice in the back of my head so I would love a reality check.

Thanks.

Which capsule--dynamic, or condenser?

The standard is 1--ground, 2--positive, and 3--negative.

With ohmmeter you can check the capsule for continuity, however, it might have some other defects like rubbing coil, deteriorated foam, which changes the sound, etc. You won't be able to check all these things without listening to the capsule.

And some dynamics have transformers so there might be continuity between 2 and 3 but not in the capsule itself.
