| Microphone Capsule"GERMAN"style On EBAY Question: There are capsules have been advertised on ebay for quite some time they have a U87 version and a U47 version. I am wondering about popping one of these into a cheap marshal microphone. does anyone know it it would sound ok? I know there is an EQ issue with U87 and that the phantom would be 48 instead of 60. On the eq, i am sure that it can be done in the DAW and the 48V would just mean that the noise floor would be higher (not such a problem with loud brass instruments...) Am i right?

| I find the best way to study something is to buy the capsule - and then solder it in and see why i shouldnt have done that... like the time I bought these mega magnets and made my own ribbon microphone. We had superman crash through the window glued to these magnets and the acoustics werent too bad - but then I found a couple of NADY ribbons for 79.99 that I opened up and augmented with new transformers and better grounding/ribboning - so u learn a lot by just trying. For example if u open a AKG solid-tube - it has a cheap plastic diafragm that MUST be replaced. I should just buy a peluso C12 diaphragm for it...

| Where you did get impression of 60v phantom? Solidtube has an electrec capsule, so the electronics of the mic are for those. Prodigy Professional :: View Forum - The Lab PSW Recording Forums: Klaus Heyne's Mic Lab Might be good places to futher reading Regards Matti |

| Sorry i mixed up 2 topics: 1) Putting in a neuman capsule into a marshal 2) Putting a C12 capsule into a solidtube. I wasnt aware the solidtube is electret (i was wondering why it sounded the way it did) http://www.gyraf.dk/schematics/AKG_S..._Schematic.gif ouch... I am wondering if there is a way to power a real capsule in that thing. The body is nice and it has a nice power supply... for 800 i paid for it 6 years ago... I learned a lot since then... Is anyone aware of a mod board I can use to put in real electronics in there?

| oooops: I mixed up 2 topics... 1) Neuman capsule on marshal - I assumed for some reason there is a DC to DC converter in there somewhere http://recordist.com/ampex/schematic...ann/u87sch.jpg 2) I forgot about the Solidtube being an electret hence it being tucked away somewhere in my studio. That thing was such a scam.

| NO ERROR Neumann Models U 87 and U 87 Ai I was right that is does have a DC-to DC converter Both models were equipped with a battery compartment, which, in the case of the U 77, accepted one 9-volt battery, and in the case of the U 87, two 22.5-volt batteries of the type at the time used by photographic flash guns. “By 1986, however,” as Stephan Peus relates, “these batteries were no longer obtainable and the battery compartment became otiose, so we decided to use it to accommodate a DC-DC converter of the kind used by the U 77 and therefore capable of delivering exactly 60 volts to the capsule. Now the signal-to-noise ratio of the (phantom-powered) U 87 A was exactly as good as that of the U 77 and all of 3 dB better than that of the U 87 without the ‘A’!” Thank god I am not senile...

| The "German style" capsules on eBay are Peluso capsules. For more info on them, I recommend you go to his website. He at times sells capsules, shockmounts, and other small items on eBay. |

| Ah ok! thanks! I guess that is what I was trying to find out As for the 60V the problem is that the marshal reduces the voltage off the 48v so the question is how bad/how much noise will it have
