newb to console cleaning.. please help.

Im pretty good when it come to tearing things apart and fixing them. I just picked up a sondtacs M series 32 input 8 buss.. stereo output of course..

Im heading to NY to pick the console up wednesday. It was a good buy at $575 US. At least I hope so.

The console is in working order comes with power supply and a roadcase.

Now to the point. I KNOW this thing is going to need a good cleaning. SOme of the faders are scatchy and it looks like it needs a good once over.

Can someone please give me a step by step, or a headstart on what to do and not to do...

Im thinking since its modular.. pull A strip at a time and Use some Can Air... then some Deoxit..(IT has a little lube in it right?) Then Maybe if you think its cool add a little oil (I have used sewing macine oil in the past) to the pots if they need it.

What should I look out for when taking strips out...

Im pretty sure the talkback on this thing sucks ass.. from what I was told. I may have a tech replace this eventually...

So in a nutshell.. anything in the way of advice or a word of wisdom from all you slutz would make me very thankful.

Thanks for your help. I will upload pics and update you once I start.

I don't know your console, but I did go through a Tac Scorpion an MCI JH-636 and then a Neve 5315, so what I can offer is this:

1) Go easy with the de-oxit, or not at all. I think it does have lubrication in it. Do not SOAK the parts. A little goes a long way.

2) Exercising pots and switches goes a long way. Do that before you spray them.

3) Clean the parts first the best you can with q-tips. I'm honestly not a fan of spraying any crap on them.

4) Get a diagram of your channel strip and make enough copies so you have one for each channel. As you go through your channels, highlight on the diagram what is not working. Then you have a reference point to work from. Keep it in a binder with your manuals etc.

5) Do not apply power to anything until it is all dry. Also do not hot swap parts.

I got good at MCI channels, and the fader packs... so be patient and take your time. Do NOT use any spray cleaner on Faders, most of them have a lubricant on them that you will mess up if you use alchohol or something similar. Just clean them with a lint free towel and work them back and forth.
