Question playback from MX5050 sounds like it's underwater!

I was in the middle of a recording session yesterday and had guitar and drum tracks hitting my Otari MX5050 1/2" 4-track. The tape machine had been on and functional for a good part of the day while we were getting sounds and making the first few takes. I get to the end of the tape and since I was paying attention it spooled off. No big deal. I re-spool the tape and rewind back to the beginning and we do a fourth take of the song. Upon playback everything sounded completely messed up. It sounded like the band was underwater. It was like the guitarist was strumming his guitar with the whammy bar in hand. It was not subtle at all. I took off that reel and put on a different one. Same problem.

Anyone have a clue what happened?

It was a bit warm in the studio, but not overbearing. Also the pitch control on the deck doesn't work correctly, but it wasn't engaged. I did pull up on the switch though as I was scratching my head trying to figure out what was going on and noticed that the machine made a clicking sound like something was stuck. I had to switch that control a couple times and power down the machine before it stopped. But the underwater thing didn't change or stop either way.

Any ideas?

Brad

Check the tape path,,, surely you wouldn't have the tape flipped with the oxide layer facing wrong way.

Look for something mechanical affecting tape and head integrity.

Tape was definitely going the right way.

As far as I could tell everything seemed to be moving correctly and at the proper speed. However, I imagine it would be difficult to see a periodic speed change like the one that resulted in what I heard. I'll have another look when I return to the studio.

When you say it sounded like band was underwater.. are you talking muffled or reduced high frequency response (dirt build up or tape not intimate with head) or wow and flutter, full bandwidth frequency that is modulating up and down.. most likely caused by irregular mechanical drag on tape, pinch roller not engaged properly, etc..?

Since you say it occurred after you rewound and reloaded the tape, that is the obvious thing to check. Just for chuckles it might be a good idea to remove and reload the tape again, just to see if that makes a difference, since it did the last time.

I'm talking about full bandwidth pitch modulation....like wow and flutter to the 100th power.

Like I said, after I noticed the problem I rewound and reloaded the tape. Since I still had the problem I took off that reel of tape and put on a new one. Same issue.

thanks,
Brad

Mechanical trouble. Sounds like the brake may be stuck partially engaged.

Brake problems could explain the stuck clicking sounds I heard. I think you guys may be onto something. I'll have to open it up and see what's going on. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

thanks,
Brad

Could be something simple like an end of tape photo sensor that is incorrectly indicating tape run out when it's still present.. or could be something else..

The pinch roller tension should be checked. Sounds like the take up reel is pulling the tape through the capstan. With any luck, that's not the way it was recorded and you haven't lost it altogether.

When the tape runs out, the arm shuts off the take up, but the pinch roller can then sit still on the capstan for a while, and possibly make a little flat spot if powered down. I have not seen that happen on a 5050, just a guess.
