| Gear interested | Reel-to-reel audio recorder ??? Hey all, I was cleaning out my grandparents garage this weekend and found a Tandberg Series 6000X reel to reel. It's super clean, looks almost brand new, and all the play, reward, FF, functions seem to work fine. Plugged in a mic and the meters work great too. The only thing is I've never ever used one of these and need some info on it if anyone has any. I don't even know what kind, size, or even where to get the right tape for this thing. I tried to Google up a pdf manual for it, but came up empty besides some people selling printouts on ebay. So any helpful tips you can give will be mucho appreciated. Also, is this a good quality machine as far as R2R's go? Might be fun to put down some tracks on this monster sometime. Thanks |

If memory serves, it's a 2 track model which uses 1/4" tape. You'll probably need to have the pinch rollers rebuilt as they oxidize. New old stock (NOS) pinch rollers are extremely rare and there's a pretty good chance the NOS ones are probably not in great shape either. Don't waste your time trying to find a scanned service/owner's manual; you're going to have to buy one (either at one of the vintage R2R places or if you're lucky, on Ebay). Digital versions go for $14 (TANDBERG 3000X Service Manual) and several companies offer hard copy anywhere from $25-$50 (Google the manual). I hope that helps... Take care and good luck! | |
