What kind of upgrades can i do to consoles in general?
replace op-amps, E.Q. caps, coupling caps, direct-couple audio path, install feedback caps
What else can i do to consoles to upgrade them?
Types of parts to use:
1.) Wima or MIT polypropylene caps
2.) Panasonic electrolytic capacitors
3.) Roederstein metal film resistors
4.) Hitachi transistors
I guess a general rule is to always dump Nichicon caps ?
Don't use polyester film caps in the EQ modules? is this a general rule? |
I think this is more of a forum question than a PM.
Short of redesign work, there's not a lot really. Swapping out parts sometime makes a nice change, but only the very cheapest boards skimp on components that much - the frame is going to cost alot anyway, why save $5 a board on op-amps if it makes a big difference?
The pots and sliders are the place that where the mid-level type boards really save money. But, you have to find a replacement that's the same size and shape. The good boards use fairly standardized parts, but the budget high volume boards often don't. Pots are easier to deal with than sliders, usually.
Sometimes you want the EQ pre-insert or want to modify the way the busses work or something. This is sometimes easy to do if you have schematics.
What is it that your gear does that you don't want it to do - or doesn't do that you desire it to?
