Consoles IC used alot 5534, TLO74

Most consoles use 5534 or TLO74 IC chips

What other IC chips did vintage consoles use ?

TDA1034 IC , 741

API always used 2520 IC op-amp chips?

990 IC op amp

Do you guys know any others IC op-amps for old vintage consoles?

API uses 2520 op amps, but its not an IC itīs a discrete op amp and so are the 990.

My Soundcraft was loaded with 5534's, TL071's, TL072's, and TL074's. The 5534's stayed, but the TL07x's have been replaced - and the power supply upgraded.

I got a second one and connected them up in the console. The digital stuff is from one supply, the analogue supplies are split halfways through the board.

Op amps and mods

The most used were the TLO family, single, dual and quad- 71,72 & 74 respectively, and sometimes the lower noise, lower current but not much better sounding 81, 82 & 84, again respectively. I believe the Trident consoles used the TL chips. The Signetics singles and dual, the ever- popular 5534 &5532, again respectively, were somewhat better sounding..and used extensively- many Brit consoles of a certain era. Occasionally one might see LM318 (a single, not bad sounding at the time, but harder to design with) and duals like the LF353, etc. If you get handy at substituting, you can alway upgrade to the Burr-Brown or Analog Devices line of opamps- low noise, sound good and some, but not all will run at higher supply voltages, where they have a bit more poot. And sound way better, to my ear. They are getting expensive...1-8$ each...ouch! Watch the total current drain when you get a pile of these running, as in a large console. You may stress the PS. The main caveat is that really great wide-band opamps can oscillate when used as plug-in replacements for these older guys. Usually a small cap used in the feedback loop, in the 10-100pf range will reduce the GBP, so that this goes away and you still have actual bandwidth upto 100kHz or better- for those of you with bat's hearing. The monster API at the late lamented O'Henrys, was modified with Video opamps (among other things),with bandwidth out to the moon, BUT these can drive very low Z balanced lines,( 50, 75 oHm) such as the main mutichannel busses. Sounded killer. As far as mods go...Op-amps, caps and power supplies- there is an endless variety of improvements just there.

Op amps and caps redux

Speaking of caps and such. One thing I always thought odd was why everybody thought the middle series Neves ( 8036?, etc- the one with the hospital-blue colour scheme) sounded really great .....with a boatload of NE5532' and 4's and those nasty-sounding tantelum caps throughout the entire design. They ( tants) are not just used as power supply bypass, as was common in that era, but are actually in the signal path instead of electrolytics. These are not to be confused with the older discrete, 1081 Eq-laden desks which of course, do sound really fab. I may have the model number wrong, but it's whatever model board is at Bryan Adam's Warehouse studios.

Hi

There's more than a smidgen of misinformation in this post.

Why did folk think they sounded great? ... because they did sound great! But great to one man's ears are crap to another's!

No, not any of the RAF Blue grey consoles like the 8036... the TDA1034 (predecessor to the 5534) didn't show up until after they went Extra Dark Sea Grey (New appearance design) around 1975/6.

They didn't appear until late models of the 8058/68/78. I don't know where you get the "later (as in 1972) 1081 desks which sound great"... your timeline is crooked!

And you won't find 5532's in any of them!

The tantalum capacitors are great, have very low leakage, the 1073, 1081 and all the favourite modules are full of tants and a damn good job too. Tants should not be used for power supply decoupling without a big series resistor...

Put aluminium electrolytics where the tants are and the sound goes down the toilet.

Yes, you have the modules wrong and most of the post is your opinion which, of course, you are entitled to.

Bryan Adam's console is the third of the AIR consoles that's bi-polar supply and full of 5534's and tantalums. It sounds great, does it not?
