TapeOp interview George Massenburg

hi guys,

with my little understanding I didnt get what he said there..

he will "recreate" his 8200 with DSP power instead of analogue Computertechniques..

so, no OPamps and just a DSP? but how can it be analoguesignalpath if its DSP controlled?

cheers

I took this to mean, using DSP to analyze the signal, and then digitally control the analog processing. For example, switching different analog circuits into the signal path.

I believe this same approach is used in the Distressor, and may also be the technique used in the Anamod gear.

Just to elaborate a little further. I recall from the interview he mentioned that the 8200 had a bunch of "analog computers" - that is, electronic subsystems that perform various functions to control the unit, but don't actually have the audio signal passing through them. As DSP power advances, the idea is to recreate the "analog computing" portion digitally. Which makes it a lot more tweakable, and even upgradeable into the future.

I wonder what is meant here by "analog computers". That is what op-amps are, "operational amplifiers": summing amps, differential amplifers, etc.

Not the 8200, that's the EQ. He's working on the 8900 which has a very complicated analog sidechain currently.

Yes, opamps. In the interview he mentions that he used opamps to characterize signal procesing. He calls them analogs to real world components.

In his new version of the 8900 compressor he will use DSP chips in the same way. And as mentioned also in the sidechain at 192K for more accuracy.

I must say it's a very cool interview wich you may have to re-read to fully understand it. George Massenburg is a guy that knows what he is doing.
