Help - 115 volt verses 230 volt - can a unit be easily converted?

Help - 115 volt verses 230 volt - can a unit be easily converted?

Howdy folks!

I'm in the USA with 115 volts. I just got my hands on a nice pro audio unit that I believe may be a 230 volt unit.

How can I tell for sure what voltage this unit is before plugging it into the wall?

If this is a 230 volt unit and I plug it into 115 volts, what will happen?

If this is indeed a 230 volt unit, what is the best way for me to get it up and running in my 115 volt studio?

Can I buy a simple converter of some type to put in front of the power cord? Or will the unit need to be opened up and modified?

I'd appreciate as much insight as possible on this subject. Thanks!!

Hi

It would really help if you gave the product name and model that you refer to.... "nice pro audio unit" doesn't tell us much.

geoff is of course right... never hurts to be confused by the facts... what exactly "leads you to believe" it's a 230v unit?? the likelyhood of toasting something by plugging it in 120 if it's a 230V isn't very high... the reverse though can be catastrophic... it most likely just wont wake up properly as the voltage it's getting will be @1/2 of expected... as to adapting it if needed if your lucky it's just a simple a jumper change that any competent tech can do...

Hi guys...

It's a Speck Mic Pre 5.0... on the rear, there are boxes for 115V and 230V... the 230V box is checked... but I got it from someone in the US who would have / should have told me I was not able to use it here in the US if indeed that was the case... I should / will contact that person to clarify (they are not availabe right now), and realize I should probably contact Speck as well, but I was just hoping to get a super quick answer here for now so that I can get this thing up and running fast... if possible.

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated as always.

Hi

I'd imagine that a single phone call to Speck would give you all the info you need!

Someone just emailed with a similar question.

If the jumpers are set to the "115" position then it should be fine.

With the global market these days, I'm finding units meant for the euro market here in the US and vice-versa. Someone in Europe probably sold your MP5.0 to someone in the US, made the jumper conversion, and forgot to change the designation on the back panel.

Thank you Vince for your super speedy and helpful reply.

I appreciate the excellent design of your unit that allows easy change from 115V to 230V (and vise versa) with a mere flip of two easily accessible internal jumpers.
