the musicianship is usually top notch but some of the compostitions can be contrived and weak. never look to top 40 anything to be your saviour. let the cattle feed on what they will and you will have more elbow room at the next gillian welch show.

Funny

my wife turned it on for a bit untill I threw a fit. I think the musician ship and players are fantastic, I just never ever liked the sound and about 90 percent of the lyrics and style in country, I just don't get it. And ironically I am relocating to Nashville.

Uggggghhh. Allison Krauss. She may have been the best thing on that show, but she's infiltrated every alternative country and blue-grass station that I listen too.

What a pain it is to hear her after hearing Gillian Welch do something beautiful.

You want good country? John Prine, G. Welch, Steve Earle, Emmylou, Townes Van Zant. The good stuff. These people write songs that are worth listening to.

Okay, sorry for the rant. Bad country really bugs me because good country is so good.
So many people don't realize that it's impossible to do anything good in country music without some degree of subtlety. The really really good players are just pure sound and mood. They're hardly playing anything. And when they do take a break and do something fancy the tone and phrasing is usually thoughtful, well placed, and perfect for the place it takes up.

Well, it doesn't have to be traditional to be good. I feel like I write good country music, but it's more pop tinged. There are the occasional exceptions on radio, but most of the successful stuff relies on formula/cliche that is just nauseating...happy meals, diamond rings, rain, smell of jasmine, whiskey...kill me now. The problem is that radio is wagging the dog. They've got to have songs that don't make middle America concentrate (ie. turn the station) too hard in between advertising. I firmly believe it's not about the song anymore - although, occasionally one will slip through.

You know,

I don't know his music, but I kind of liked George Straight. More in the vein of traditional country. Think I might pick up one of his CD's. Anyone care to recommend one?

I had to turn it off and watch Family Guy reruns after a few songs. Just my opinion but it sounded like almost every singer was flat. Perhaps this was the in-ear monitoring or something. Jason Aldean's guitarist was way too loud on the mix when they played. If some of the performers spent as much time on their music and playing as they do picking out new outfits from Hot Topic and tying to make their hair stand up, it might have been more entertaining. Brad Paisley was about the only thing that was worth watching. I saw he had his Trainwreck amp as usual...he seems to know about guitar tone.

Can't go wrong with some George Straight. Great production by Tony Brown and good mixes by Chuck Ainlay.

One of the funnier moments was when I saw them pan up close to Jamie Fox, and he had this look on his face like "um, why in the heck am I here???" pricelesss.
