banging my head off a cad maxcon...

Hi,
Newbie here, does anybody have any experience with maintenance of a CAD Maxcon 2.
I'm trying to replace the mic gain, tape trim and pan pots on the thing and I can't seem to find the correct pots to fit in. Either they don't have PCB connectors or the have the wrong shaft. I'm trying everywhere at this stage.
Has anybody done this job? Could anybody tell me off the toop of their head who manafactures these pots?

Thanks in advance,
Dave Slevin.

They are far east Alps knock-offs. If CAD doesn't have them, you might be able to sub some from Soundcraft, Amek or others. They are the 16 mm sized pots. You can buy new Alps but the min is 1200 pieces. Watch out for the very thin traces going to the pads, they break often. Every one of these I've been through had broken Aux pots somewhere due to mechanical failure. Use a good de-soldering tool or you may end up with more problems than you started with.

Open up the Digikey and Mouser catalogs and start poring over the dimensions. Probably the most important aspects are the pin spacing and the height (the distance from the center axis of the shaft to the top of the circuit board). Get into that ballpark and then you can usually find variations on bushing size and threads, shaft diameter, resistance, taper, etc. There are tons of incompatible pots out there, but for any particular size there are usually several different manufacturers. I know CTS makes some 16mm stuff which may not be the quality you're after. Omeg makes some good ones but as far as I know you can only get them directly from them, in the UK. I'm sure minimum quantities apply. My suggestion is to try and figure out a part number for the one you've got and/or one you think is identical from another manufacturer. Then you'll have an easier time searching, and you'll find some parameters are more negotiable than others (for example you may prefer Cermet but maybe conductive plastic will do, but maybe you'll be stuck with carbon...)
