Problems with Studer A 800 erase circuit

Hi fellow gearslutz:

A year ago I purchased this perfect condition ( 10.000 Hrs, heads changed at 9.200 hrs)A800 from a TV station, untill now I have done some transfers only, but now I have a couple of analogue sessions coming, so I called my Tech. to realign the erasing capabilities of the machine because it wasn't erasing properly.

After alingnment of the master oscilator card according to the manual, and subsequent alignment of erase current in each channel, the machine is still not erasing properly.

Can Anybody shed a light on this?

It will be higly appreciated as here in CHILE I don't have any other options.

Thanks everybody

Regards from the botton of the world

Make sure the tape is tracking properly on the heads and the tape is not sagging down as you play.

The track may record at one height and pb at another and then not all will erase properly.

Test with clean tape with one track only to make sure you're not chasing your tail...so-to-speak.

See if the problem exhibits itself on all or just some of the tracks.

Good Luck!

Are you trying to completely erase 499 on it?
Because an A-800 won't.

When setting the erase peak trimmers, the erase amplifiers make their dreaded red lights come on brightly: (erase amp clipping) before it will erase 499. 456 erases fine, however.

You are not going to like the solution.
Different Power FET's in the erase amplifiers and/or a higher power rail voltage.

Studer is aware of this, I think. They may know more.

dr strangelove does the 800 block have a wrap adjustment?

i dont remember.
if so i would give it a little tweak while listening to the erase depth.
its a pretty safe adjustment and worth a try.
