I need to find some suitable replacements and I'm a little unsure about what to get. There's two diodes in question, the first has yellow/green/violet bands followed by T. The second has yellow/green/violet/black bands followed by S. I'm guessing the 1st is a 1n457. The second is maybe a 1n4570? The letters have me at a loss though. |

Tom, I don't want to sound smug, but are you sure you're IDing a diode? These sound like resistor color codes. If you search out a 1n457 diode, you'll see it has no colors on the case, just the orientation stripe. Can you take a close-up photo and attach it? BTW, the number 1n4570 comes up empty, as in no such animal. Best, Paul

Well, they only pass current one way with my DMM, so yeah, I think they're diodes. Correction on the second one though, it has yellow/green/violet/brown bands and S, so 1n4571 zener, which would make sense. Still don't know what the S is for and the 1n4571 only has an A option. |

Tom, A couple of things to consider, then I'll pass the ball. I checked 2 major distributors, and the 1n4571 doesn't exist (any more) under that JEDEC number. Also, have you pulled the component out of the circuit an tested it for continuity? You may be getting a diode type reading from a neighboring component. Good luck, Paul |

I haven't check it out of the circuit yet but I did locate a partial schematic which shows a zener (but no specific #). It's in a vintage module so it may well be obsolete. Assuming it's a zener, the question of what to replace it with still remains. Here's a pic. It's the best my camera will do. Paul, I appreciate your help so far. I was really hoping this was something obvious to anyone with a deeper electronics background than myself. It's starting to look like it's more trouble than it's worth now. |

I vaguely recall strange marking on constant current diodes, but I never used them in design and am not familiar with decoding the stripes. Seems logical they would follow resistor scheme for color to number translation but other than that I have no idea. JR |

Tom, I managed to dig up some info on the color coding. http://www.tpub.com/neets/book7/24k.htm Good luck, Paul |
