Making Some Eqs

I really like the eq on the Midas Venice stuff. How hard would it be to make a powered 8 channel eq based on the circuit? Anyone have the schematic? What about the eq on the Ghost which is pretty cool. I would love to make some eqs, anyone know of some good schematics or DIY projects for such? Maybe some Trident Eq schematic or something?

There are several articles on my web site that have schematics of EQ and filter circuits, including a very nice yet simple and flexible parametric EQ. Go here:

Then scroll about a third of the way down the list to the DIY section.

I'm designing/building an EQ unit with a buddy of mine. I'll post the results when we're through if anyone's interested.

Well, it's compact little box, about 12" x 5". It was designed with dual use in mind; studio and as possibly part of a live guitar/bass rig. I've always been frustrated by dearth of practical, hi-fi gear to the performing musician that was also affordable. It has 1/4" balanced TRS in and out, both transformer-coupled. (This also allows TS in and out as well.) There is boost and cut at 90hrz from +16db to -16db, cut only at 220hrz, 400hrz and 1.5khrz from -3 to -16db and a high shelf with -6db cut at 10khrz. All class A, discrete, point-to-point. We tried to make the Q's as musical as possible since they have to be fixed. It being balanced TRS you can also easily patch it into a 1/4" bay. Oh yeah, and it comes with a custom +36 power supply.

Robert Derby of Valvotronics developed it with me since I found his excellent DI box two years ago. It is meant for retail with a street price of about $495.00 but not more. I get the prototype this week for testing so I may be missing one thing or two. Robert hinted that custom boxes with other, different freqs. could be possible too since he's doing each box by hand. I'll post some pics when I can.

lots of bands with cut only... actually doesn't make sense to me

what's the idea behind it?

Hi-fi. We could keep it class-A, discrete that way and frankly it sounds better. We don't expect it's for everybody, just those who know what they want. YMMV.

P.S.-With our box if you don't want to use a certain frequency you simply flip a toggle switch and it's out of circuit.

Okay, I got the prototype today and we had to make a few changes. Maybe even a few more to come before market:

It's got a low cut of -3db at 88hrz as well as a seprate control for bass boost at 88hrz if desired. You can also click both on for an interesting curve. There is cut from -3db to-16db at 200hrz and 400hrz and both have an on/off toggle switch as well. There is also the same cut available at a choice of 1.6khrz or 2.7khrz (switched). The high cut filter is centered around 10khrz at -6db when engaged. It has the same +36 power supply and the unit is very quiet, has very low distortion and sounds great. The LED's make a pinkish light that if one or the other voltages is bad they will light up red or blue entirely. The filters are toroid coil-cap and resistor. I'll try to post some pics (it ain't pretty right now) and results later when I get a chance to take it around the block a few times.

I think we might be making one more change before its done. Bob Olhsson suggested making the 400hrz switchable to 800hrz as an option. Sounds like a good idea.

We're almost there....

One more update (like anyone cares...):

After some testing we're gonna' drop the low cut down to -3db at 70hrz and have these freq. groups as options, all switchable, on or off (still from -3 to -16db cut on each freq.)-

Either 200 or 400hrz

Either 600 or 800hrz

and

Either 1.6 or 2.7khrz

High cut still -6db at 10k and low boost to +16db at 88hrz

Transformers are handwound and custom made.

Final plan is to have -2db cut on each freq. to start rather than -3db. Each freq. will have on or off. High cut will now have a choice of 8k or 10k at -6db. Low cut will be -6db at 70hrz.

It's musical as all get-out on a direct signal.
Tried it in channel with some mics on an amp yesterday
and it was sweet. Getting closer...
