guitar tones

Ok guyz, I'm curious....

How do you guyz get phat guitar tones. Give me to the last detial from mic to micing to pre, to converter, e.c.t. I wanna know how to get those blasting guitar tones, and how to keep them from getting muddy. Also how to mix them. Thanks guyz.

With a good guitar an amp, it's hard to go wrong. It's highly reccomended that your preamp is a transformer balanced one on guitar (a la Neve, API, Chandler). The choice of mic is up to you. Most people use the 57's, a lot of peole use 121's, some people use Sennheiser e609 silvers/e606's/md 421's, others like the Blue Baby Bottle. It just depends what you are going for. The position of the mic depends on the mic you are using and the sound you want but it is as crucial as mic choice. 1 inch moves can make or break a guitar sound sometimes.

High passing guitars (pick your frequency), using fewer mics due to phase issues and turning down distortion prevents muddiness.

Have a look at Slippermans post over at PSW on distorted guitar techniques. It's the most comprehensive post on any of these forums.
