I'm just wondering (certainly not criticizing) if star grounding makes any difference here. In other words, grounding each pot to the one with all the wires as opposed to looping it from one pot to the next.

It is not an amplifier so ground wiring sequence does not matter at all.

This is pure digital recording gear, with no harmonic or other distortion. Surely the motor, revolving one revolution drives the gears which turn the cams which operate GPO Type 2000 relays which in turn rotate Strowger Uniselectors. When the motor stops so do the Uniselectors. A voltage on the centre wiper of the uniselectors passes through the contacts to light bulbs which remain lit till the motor revolves again. Thus the lights record the motion of the motor and the system is not volatile, has no microprocessors, and best of all has nothing whatever to do with Bill Gates. Also they help warm the environment that the recorder is housed in. Hopefully petrol / gasoline runs the motor.

HMMM! For some reason, that Grommes mixer looks QUITE familiar to me <g!!>:

Index of /projects/grommes

Pan's unit had a bunch of multi-section 'lytics on the power supply rails that had sh!t the bed, and drop-in replacements were made from unobtanium.

SO, Pan and I did the best scheme we could concoct, which was to mount some "modern" 'lytics onto a piece of phenolic board. See pix in the link, above.

Pan had a stash of phenolic board, as well as the parts/tooling to "stake" eyelets onto the phenolic. Hence, we went "olde school" for the retrofit. Pan machined the card, I stuffed it/wired it onto the Grommes chassis.

In a Perfect World, I would have found exact replacements for the multi-section 'lytics, but alas....I did the best I could. My motto is "do no harm to vintage gear", but sometimes Ya Gotta Do What Ya Gotta Do to move along.

Interestingly, after Pan's project, I have now run into three other Grommes mixers that are part-and-parcel of the "secret sauce" used by tracking/mixing engineers from around the country.

I now need to look around in my digipix files to see if I have other slutty pix to post....

<g>

I tried posting this last night but was having connectivity probs, so my missive apparently went into the bit bucket. Here I Go Again... <g>

First of all, the war story. See the tail-end of the ramble for a link to a pic of my "baby" in it's new home:

Roth Technical Services 32x24 Recording Desk

I recently uncovered "serial number zero" of the I/O strip, the original pre-production prototype. I wish I had taken pix before dismembering it to extract the mic preamp and EQ cards (doing a rackup of them to gauge any local interest for making up some "reissues"), but Oh Well.

Thanks, Steve! It just about killed me...LOL!

It ended up in your "backyard", so to speak, in Costa Mesa (or was it Santa Ana..I forget!) in the spring of 1978. Maranatha Music decided to build their own studio, and I was friends with their Chief Engineer (Jonathan David Brown, who was originally from here in Okla. City).

It was a pretty tricked-out place, with a Stephens 24 track and Ampex ATR-100 for the recording machines. I had the privilege to interact with John Stephens during the installation..a very fascinating guy!

I forget who did the acoustical designs, but he was well-known Back In That Day.

Brian that looks very nice...
My first thoughts were how long did it take, and it would have taken a nice bundle of cash to get going.
A scary project...

Jonathan and I hashed out the details at the Spring 1977 AES show in LA (May, IIRC) and the desk was installed in January (?) 1978. My then-employer bankrolled the parts, etc.

Steve, Chris Taylor (who had worked at Maranatha) now has it in his studio, in the same area code as you.
