I was surprised to see such an abundance of 85-degree-rated samxon caps and JRC4565 Opamps in a very recent (modern) piece of equipment.
Also in there among others were two NJM4556 and TL027 Opamps.

I know this is a rather cheap interface, yet after Focusrite's Liquid 56 interface (which I own - expect mugshots of that one!) this is supposed to be the next best thing qualitywise.

I wonder how this one would pass in a converter blind test - since it's mostly the analogue part of any converter that has the strongest impact on it's sound quality...

Or am I simply prejudiced against opamp models starting with 4...?

Also posted some close-ups of the other ICs in there (unknown to me).
The same could be said about SSL's Alpha Link, uses the JRC4565 also. A very expensive unit (channel count is high, I'll give them that) and using prosumer grade electronics??

I just don't understand it.

Today I took a look under the hood of the Liquid Saffire 56 interface - their flagship interface so to speak. Same story.
Forrests of cheapo samxon 85degree rated electrolytic caps in the audio path, as well as endless rows of JRC2212 and JRC4564 opamps. Not much of a suprise after seeing the DSP24, but disappointing nonetheless. Still it looks like a great bit of engineering skills went into this, just the ingredients themselves are the cheapest of the cheapo.

I don't see anything wrong with those op-amps. When designed properly, they sound fine.

I'll almost guarantee that they aren't the basis of the pre-amp portion, though... they really aren't a good choice for low-noise, high-gain sutuations.

EAR 660 Limiting Amplifier

EAR 660 Limiter, wonderful sounding unit.11K USD right now per piece.
I mean they sound beautiful & magic -no question - but where is that money?
Certainly not in those 69cent rotary switches....
Dont want to bash this but as a customer who actually bought these...at least i am really enjoying the sound - need to switch off the tech in me.

I see a lot of copper and iron in there - that ain't cheap....

And a lot of skilled hand-building.

It's hard to say about the controls. A lot of the expensive stuff looks a lot like the cheap stuff externally these days. Besides, since RoHS, you pay throgh the nose for decent switches because the plating you want isn't allowed in cheaper, consumer stuff headed for europe anymore. Supply and demand and all that.

Apogee Ensemble vs Mytek 8x192 Macro PORN!

Just picked up a nice used 8x192 with the Firewire DIO card and decided to see what both of them are made of. The sound stage of Mytek is incredibly wider and deeper and all the instruments somehow find their own place in the mix compared to the Apogee's not so much. Keep in mind this is listening to house / techno music, a lot of which is not mixed / mastered to the highest standards!

First we have the mighty Mytek...

Those I/V converters and filters are running so hot the part numbers flew clean off!

All that remains is the dust on the elcaps.

Any guess what those op-amps!? might be? Why would they make them unrecognizable?

The first two are the Gold DA-924 and the last is the 122 A/D.

i am shocked

I really wanted to buy 2 of them but now they are really expensive.
I got a ear 822 and a ear 823. Those are more expensive then the puls tech.

That EQ came from one of the mastering rooms at A&M. It was modified for Hi-Z in Lo-Z out active operation instead of the 600R passive of the original design.

It actually doesn't have any transformers, those cans have inductors.

Where did you get it?
