I haven't gone thru it with a fine toothed comb, but - I think this is the 'oldest' gear porn I've seen yet on this thread - 1959 was a "very good year".

Hi Lynn,
Have a close look at the schematic... The whole amplifier remains in the Pultec circuit, even when bypassed... unless you're talking about the Power Station Pultecs. To stay on topic, here's a shot of a big, blue, beautiful Pultec EQP-1A.

The only thing in that mic that looks iffy is the small caps - depending on where they are in the circuit, they may be just fine....

There isn't really all much in there. I would like to know what is under the black goop. It looks as if it shares the same PCB with other LDCs in the range. The missing components on the underside would appear to include the remote control bits for the TLM127, and probably switchable pattern capability for the others. I don't like the look of the ribbon cable.

I suspect that they are using a Teflon PCB substrate, which is probably a good idea, if expensive.

Buy the time you have derived your various power supplies from the phantom power, got some switching logic sorted and various other house keeping done, the actual microphone amplification probably is only about half the circuit you see.

Now what I want to see is the inside of a MKH series.

I'll almost guarantee that it's not a PTFE substrate - no reason for it and it raises the cost. If they did it for smugness, we'd hear about it in their advertising.

I do like the Red conformal coating on the top side.

The inside of a MKH would be interesting - anybody got one?

I wonder what the hex inverter on the bottom of the board is for. I'm not familiar with this mike, I don't know its feature set.
Is that Analog Devices chip an OP184, on the top of the board?

No, I was guessing based upon the bleached white colour of the exposed substrate. But looking again, it is a hybrid device. It it has printed resistors on the board, so it is ceramic. The board seems to structurally support the entire capsule structure.

Could be white or pale green solder mask. I'm guessing it's plain FR4 - and I think that the wide spots in the traces are for heat sinking.

If it were ceramic substrate, at least you're paying for something other than the name...

The hex switch is probably for pattern control, roll off, and pad control.

I hope nobody's using FR4 anymore. The higher temperatures needed for lead-free solders (due to RoHS) mean you need a higher-temperature laminate for the circuitboard as well. Some of the new stuff looks a little different, some of it looks exactly the same.

I'm pretty sure it is a thick film hybrid. They are not all that expensive to make. You get to laser trim all the resistors, so there are some opportunities. (It isn't an option, untrimmed the tolerance is about 50% - but after pretty good.)

Hybrid Electonics Australia Pty Ltd - Six Steps of Hybrid Manufacture

Somehow I detect a certain, um, cynicism about the value for money here.
