After Fade Listen......

Am I correct in saying that channel solo does not usually
allow you to hear a signal and hear the faders effect on that signal

That is why AFL exists?

Thanks

Agreed. Watch the master level of the 'solo' section when hitting the channel solo switch. You could get a nasty surprise .

Best, Paul

usually a solo is "destructive" in that it destroys the mix by muting all other channel faders that are not in solo safe.

a listen buss will take a channnel and route it through a seperate mix buss and allow the mix to play through the console and not ruin a 2 track mix take. so you are safe to listen while running a final mix.

afl after fader listen and

pfl prefader listen.

I always thought of solo as stereo so by definition after fader and pans but the name has been adopted in some low end mixers with various configurations some mono to save parts and complexity.

Solo in recording was usually not destructive, as in only presented in the control room output with no impact on actual L/R bus but there was a solo variant that muted all but the soloed channel so you could hear it in reverb and efx returns. That would obviously trash a mix so couldn't be used during final mix down, or in live SR/ broadcast applications.
