Call me daft too, but I don't really want a bus comp that adds 'weight' or any other type of mud, in the box

The FG-GREY doesn't add mud. And the slight bit of extra weight is when you compare it to the SSL. The Neve transformer emulation just makes the bottom a bit richer. It sounds amazing. If you like SSL sound, it nails it. The transformer emulation is subtle but gorgeous.

I'm exhausted from tuning, but I will be posting stuff soon.

Cheers,
Steven

Hey Steven,

I just purchased the McDSP 6030. What a great plugin. It has an emu of the Neve 33609 on it and when I did a quick comparison, I noticed the middle was further back of most SSL Compressors. It made the SSL emu's seem wider but, not as punchy in the middle.
Is this something the hardware does as well? I haven't used the hardware in sometime but, don't remember it doing this.
I haven't done a detailed test so, I could be wrong but, when I put it up against the IK and the Duende, I noticed it.

Are you testing Mid and Side info as well?
I think the IK version has a M/S option as well.

Just a thought to help out.

Marc

The first set I liked G the best. They were all so similar, but G stood out the most to me.

I preferred C and B1 over the rest, with D and F1 coming in second.

Overall I feel as if I would really actually have to play with all of them before really saying which I prefer, as I didn't like any of these examples at all.

Can someone just make a post with the answers and who picked what? Why is it a game?

I did a few tests with the 4K earlier, I agree with the above, that kind of compression, sometimes, 12db on a static flat electronic sample.... erm. I would never use a buss comp, or any comp like that.

For the first set I picked:

1. C
2. G
3. A

For the second set I picked:

1. C1
2. A1
3. F1

It was march harder choosing the second time around because I did not care for the settings used. I am much more confident in my choices from the first round.

I will gladly send you the results since you helped with putting together this test.
It's not a game at all or I don't take it as that.
Since I've been on GS, I've seen it all and heard it all and this seems like the best way to maintain an honest and true listening test that anyone can take.
Not knowing the answers and putting your results and finds on this thread keeps the test and yourself honest with yourself and others.
If you notice, all the other test threads, other than mine, when shown the answers, people seem to all of a sudden know that "B" was the hardware, they could magically tell by the lowend and how silky smooth the top end is than the plugin. Jus sayin.

I'll send you the results, no problem.

By the way, thanks so much for taking the time to send what you did.
I really appreciate it and humbly thank you.

Thanks,

Marc

I hope I have caught up with everyone that has posted.
I really apologize about the delay.
Been on a crunch trying to finish recordings/mixing/daddy/husband/sleep.

It's been crazy the last few months.

Thanks too everyone who has taken the test so far.
I hope you like the test and when finding the results as I have gotten so many emails back saying how surprised they were that they picked this plugin instead of that plugin that they use on a daily, really makes the test worth it to me.
I'm not trying to get likes or whatever, just trying something different to give back.
Also, trying to make people see past the marketing/hype/hearsay/BS etc.
I DO NOT work for any of these companies nor am'I doing this to push a certain product.
This is actually what I do before I buy a plugin that I feel I may have already.

Now that the VBC is out, you of course can do your own test.
I'm now testing it with a different view and songs and if you guys are interested,
I may post these audio files as well.

I did some test with an R&B/Hip Hop song called 'Down On Me" - From what I understand from the mixer himself, it was not mastered. So that's a great testing song for Lowend.
I also did "My Heart Belongs To You" - Incredible mix and depth of field in that song.
Last one what just for punch and grit "Sexy Chick" - There is no other song louder and more punchy even today than that record.

Of course, I turn them all down -20db and then I start the vigorous testing in my studio.

I have 9 Pairs of speakers from JBL, NS10's, KRK, Sony, Events, Alesis and M-Audio and 3 sets of headphones (DT 990 Pro and DT770 Pro and of course iphone 5 headsets) and one big ass sub (2 15'inches in one speaker EAW)
So, testing is crazy and fun.

Again thanks guys,

Marc

Marc you know I was on board with this testing method from the get-go. Indeed this thread lacks the pervasive "after-the-fact" posters you normally see when the results are published - usually prematurely at that.

Another test would seem more fair now that VBC is released and of course no longer contains that attack/release bug that was present in this test for the vbc examples.

I agree. I may post the new audio files I did in my test yesterday.
Just too tired right now.
Plus I have a really busy day planned.
Maybe by the weekend.

Thanks man! I do really appreciate it.

So, it looks like everybody is choosing C for the most part. I have to wonder if its for the compression characteristics or the obvious difference in EQ?

I think for the material...C did the better job tone wise for my taste.

It is interesting that I purchased C after this shootout, and really like it...but the material I mostly work with, it is not the best choice in most cases with the other buss compression choices I have.
