Summing OTB with cheap Yamaha MD8 Mixer

I recently read about summing "out of the box" and today I had the time to do a quick test. I had to use the analog mixing section of my old Yamaha MD8 recorder. All eq parameters are at 0 (middle) and the music went out of my MOTU Traveler with 8 Tracks into the MD8 and back with two tracks into the MOTU.

I made three versions:

- One sample is the mix in the box and just bounced in Logic

- One sample is a "low gain" otb mix with all levels at the MD8 a bit under 0 and back into the MOTU at line level -10dBV

- One sample is a "high gain" otb Mix with all levels above 0 on the MD8 and back into the MOTU at +4dBu not to distort the signal.

Which one is which?
Soon I will have to finish the mixes and give them to the mastering guy -
which one would you choose?

Thanks for your opinion!

(Please note that the faders of the MD8 are only 45mm so it's hard to put them all at the exact same level)

No idea which is which, but I like 3 the best, it feels the most open. 1 is muffled sounding. 2 is in between.

Try 3 sounds clearer so i guess is summing ITB, since there is nothing lost in conversion, and no analog degradation or distortion.

Try 2 sounds a bit louder but little muddy, i guess is +4

Try 1 sounds to me with less clearer, the worst i like so i guess... its -10(well its not something that should be that way).

I hope i am wrong, because ITB with cheap converters and cheap summing, lots of times sounds more clear, because there is no degradation.

this is easy

1: ITB Logic (little bit muffled but a clear punchy low end - more transient Sound)
2: Yamaha MD8 summing "high gain" (bright but i hear distortion, no punch/no transient)
3: Yamaha MD8 summing "low gain" (bright but muddy low end, no punch/no transient)

Wow! this is not easy. I'd swear they are all the same, so I have to use the force.
If I had to pick one, I'd take Try-1.
Its just more pleasing to me, I think you nailed it there. It has more detail in the lows, less graininess in the highs.
Since everyone is wrong so far, Try-1's not ITB?
My money's on Try1= +4

1 - OTB
2 - ITB
3 - OTB + Gain

Quite obvious. Bass and Kick says it all.

If I'm wrong I will jump off a small building.

Joel was right:

1. OTB "low gain"
2. ITB Logic Bounce
3. OTB "high gain"

Which version would you give to a mastering engineer?

I would give nr 1 then 3 and then 2 to the Mastering Eng - Nr.3 fits the overall Sound and Style of the Band most in my ears but the distortion is too obvious so its Nr.1

Heh, awesome...i still use my MD8 when mixing with other people, since I don't have hardware to control my DAW beyond mouse/keyboard....and our crew has always found these mixes to be best. As a straight summing mixer I think it is actually pretty golden, and the EQ section proves consistently usable for me in nearly every situation.
