I a/b a track for my 14 year old son and asked him which he like not telling him which was ITB and VCC. He picked the VCC as sounding better. I asked him why he liked it better - he said "It sounded like a real singer and guitar - the other track just sounded like sounds."

I was not even driving it, drive was at 0.

I`m no experienced on this so the differences are not too big to my untrained ears.

I like the 3rd more, as I feel it more airy.. so if I would take a guess I would go:

1. VCC
2. ITB
3. SSL

My guess: #2 is ITB (my least favourite) - as for the other 2, I honestly don't know which is which but I prefer #1, and am hoping that's the Slate. Please let me know though. Cheers!

1 - ITB
2 - SSL
3 - VCC

2 - seems the most 3D sounding to me.

3 - The bass and snare seem more full and rich....so I want to say that this is the VCC maybe the extra harmonics from the distortion is helping with that.

1 - seems the least 3D ....a little more flatter of the three.

I am a hobbyest monitoring through ADAM A7X through a apogee ensemble in my bedroom. So, I don't know if my opinions are heard through the most clinical setup.

Everyone seems to have different opinions about which one was which. That kind of tells me that there is only a little bit of difference through summing. 5 to 10 %

number two seems the most drastic of the two. I can hear a special mojo coming from that track. All well, I guess I will wait for a reply from Anguswoodhead to see how far off I was...hahahaha.

Thanks for doing this Angus.

This is an interesting test.

A great example of how huge a variation can occur from person to person (for numerous reasons).

I'm a professional musician and have a small home studio. I have a basic rec set up and mainly work ITB.

Gave these a quick listen through some beyer dt990s.

IMH(and novice)O - I liked the vibe that #3 created.

Sounded very natural to me (as you'd imagine a live gig to sound) but felt like a quality recording, almost understated production wise (if that makes sense).

I'm guessing from some of the other posts that this would make it the VCC.

#2 to me sounded the most contemporary and a little flat/2 dimensional. I'm guessing ITB.

#1 had the least decernable 'production' quality/sound to me. I'm guessing this is the SSL.

I preferred #1 by a mile.
Very open with a lot of depth and width. The low end is tight and much fuller in a more natural way than either 2 or 3.
#1 is the SSL, #2 is ITB and #3 is VCC.

3 sounded the best to me

I'm going to guess that #1 was ITB
#2 was Slate (seemed kind of exaggerated)
#3 was analog

My order I liked:

3>Had a nice punch and good 3d
1>Smooth sound, good presentation of what the track is
2>Seemed the most 2D but an honest mix

Audition:
M Audio IE40-3 driver High Definition In Ear Reference Earphones

In the morning I will listen on my Yammy NS-10's and HS50/HS10

PM me!

One thing that I thing has not been discussed or put in the front is the fact that the subject tracks seemed to have been recorded very well.

Also I think where analog summing/console and VCC would really demonstrate its superiority over ITB is a mix that contains mostly computer generated sounds (i.e. Virtual Instruments) OP I don't know if you have a track that is Virtual created but I would love to hear a Part II of this thread under the circumstances I suggest.

Great thread!

Cool idea - I'll see if I can throw something together in the next month or so.
