Mic Pre Shootout - M-Audio Profire 2626, Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 and BAE 312A

I thought it would be interesting to do a shootout between cheap and expensive mic pres. I chose to record an electric guitar through the DIs and an acoustic guitar with a microphone.

Here's the link to the shootout on my blog. Zelophone Audio: Mic Pre Shootout - M-Audio Profire 2626, Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 and BAE 312A

All files were normalized. I had to do a new performance for each preamp and tried to be as consistent as possible in my playing. Sorry about the woofy sound of the acoustic guitar's bass notes. Each take of the acoustic was recorded in the exact same position. Even though the acoustic was badly recorded I hope it can still be of some value.

24 bit, 44.1 kHz wav files can be downloaded at my blog in one RAR file.

Let me know what you think. I still haven't made up my mind. I'm swinging toward the BAE 312A on the electric. Undecided on the acoustic.

Electric DI. The Focusrite sounded the best, a surprise. The M-Audio sounded
good, but very different & almost over-driven. The Brent sounded worst, thin.

Acoustic Mic. The M-Audio was most natural, & balanced. The Brent sounded
less balanced but still ok. The Focusrite sounded the worst, a lot more harsh.

BAE was a far superior DI.

for mic'ing acoustic, the BAE had the most life, but it was also very boomy, but it could have to do with mic position, room and the instrument. Scarlet wasn't bad. Profire sounds dull
